Selene Caraballo, the Arrecife archaeologist studying childhood among the ancient Canarians

About to defend her PhD, this physical anthropologist, born in 1996, wants to bring heritage closer to people and encourage girls into science.

Selene Rodríguez Caraballo was born in Arrecife in 1996 and has spent six years on a PhD about childhood in the Aboriginal societies of the western islands. She studied History at La Laguna, did a master's in physical anthropology in Granada and has excavated in Lanzarote, Tenerife and Argentina.

As well as research, she runs school workshops and gives talks across the islands, and has launched a social media project, "Bienvenidas al antro", where she debunks archaeology myths and tells the stories of women who shaped the field. Her message is simple: archaeology is about method, not treasure hunting like Indiana Jones.

If you're curious, she has two free workshops with the Canary Institute for Cultural Development: in Haría on 15 November and in Tiagua on 22 November.
