Sailing boat runs aground on the rocks at Órzola with five young French sailors aboard

All five crew were hurt by knocks, none seriously, after the boat struck the rocks near the harbour in the early hours.

It happened in the early hours on rocks next to the Órzola harbour wall, in the north of the island. On board were three men and two women aged between 20 and 30, all French. One walked out over the rocks and the other four climbed into a life raft, from which firefighters rescued them using an inflatable boat.

All five have injuries from knocks, none of them serious. The Red Cross treated them at the scene and four were taken to Molina Orosa hospital.

It is not yet known why the boat ran aground. According to emergency service sources, the entrance to Órzola harbour is well marked and this is not the first time something like this has happened. Crews will check today for any fuel spill and work out how to recover the boat.
