Arrecife becomes the first Canary municipality with a flood plan

The capital now has an approved flood risk action plan, the first in the Canary Islands.

The plan identifies the La Fuente and Argana Alta ravines as the most sensitive areas. It provides for opening drains with protective barriers, building new stormwater networks and setting out clearly who does what when an alert is issued.

After the last rains, which left roads and drains overwhelmed, it can't come soon enough.

Mayor Yonathan de León acknowledges it will need to be extended to cover blackouts and the power and desalination plants, which are located in Arrecife.
