Recycling collection strike drags on with no deal in sight

More than a week of indefinite strike in Lanzarote's recycling collection, with 80% minimum services, and staff have just rejected Urbaser's latest offer.

On Thursday, the CCOO union and workers' representatives formally rejected the collective agreement proposal that Urbaser, the island-wide contractor, put forward on 17 October. Their main complaint is that after more than 20 months of talks, the company is reopening points that had already been agreed.

The biggest clash is over Saturdays. Urbaser wants to assign them by lowest seniority, while the union wants them covered by volunteers or new hires. Pay rises for 2027 and 2028, which the company ties to the start of the new contract, the 37.5-hour week, bonus payments, night work and bank holidays are also on the table.

Workers have again asked the Cabildo, which is responsible for the service, to step in and mediate. Until there is a deal, expect delays in emptying recycling bins.
