Hotel bosses look for ways to keep staff as hospitality training declines

More than 200 professionals at the fourth Canarias es Talento meeting, organised by Asolan with the Lanzarote Tourism Federation.

The meeting, held on Friday 16 October at a hotel on the island, brought together companies, training centres, students and institutions to discuss a problem felt in Lanzarote every season: how to attract and keep good tourism professionals.

The figure that kept coming up: in Spain vocational training enrolment has risen by 56% in ten years, but in the Canaries hospitality qualifications have fallen by almost 30%. There were talks on careers, artificial intelligence in training and staff wellbeing, and panels with hotel chains, agencies and the CIFP Zonzamas college.

According to the federation, tourism officials from the Balearic Islands even came to see how the initiative works. For any business on the island that hires staff, the message is clear: without attractive conditions, young people won't stay.
